Furious Gypsy Jazz and Soulful Klezmer! with Susanne, Vladimir Mollov, and John Marcinizyn

Contact: Reference Desk 412-372-0500 x 4

Please join us in the Gallery Space as three outstanding musicians -- clarinetist Susanne Ortner-Roberts, guitarist John Marcinizyn, and accordionist Vladimir Mollov -- perform a unique mix of folk, klezmer and gypsy jazz that switches with ease from the deeply soulful to the stunningly virtuosic.

Susanne Ortner-Roberts is internationally acclaimed both as a soloist and as a member of the German klezmer quartet “Sing Your Soul“ and of the Ortner-Roberts Duo with pianist Tom Roberts. John Marcinizyn performs frequently as a soloist and with the Ferla-Marcinizyn Guitar Duo, contralto Daphne Alderson, Duo Cieli (flute and guitar duo) and groups ranging from the Bach Choir of Pittsburgh to Billy Price. Vladimir Mollov is a founding member of the Argentinean tango quintet Cuidado, and he has performed with the Kruno Spisic Gypsy Jazz Ensemble, Bulgarika, and numerous other bands.

Representing very different periods in Germany’s history, two Germans offer insight into the Holocaust and how a new generation of Germans is reconciling this difficult period of history. Drawing from his own childhood and army experiences, Fritz Ottenheimer recounts personal anecdotes about various Germans he had met: some angels and others monsters.
Susanne Ortner-Roberts, an internationally-known German musician, accents the talk with brief Klezmer (Jewish) pieces on her clarinet and offering her observations about young Germans of today.
The performance provides an eye-opening glimpse into the Holocaust, and tackles the idea of what it means to be German in the 21st century.
A discussion/question and answer period will follow the talk.

FRITZ OTTENHEIMER, as a Jewish boy growing up in Nazi Germany, escaped Nazi persecution by immigrating to the U.S. in 1939, and eventually fighting against Germany with the U.S. Army at the end of WWII. A retired engineer, Mr. Ottenheimer has documented his experiences surrounding the Holocaust and Post-War Germany in a memoir, “Escape and Return.” He resides in Pittsburgh, PA

"Benny Goodman led one of the most popular musical groups in America in the 1930s; His January 16, 1938, concert at New York's Carnegie Hall is described by critic Bruce Eder as "the single most important jazz or popular music concert in history: jazz's 'coming out' party to the world of 'respectable' music." Seventy years later, his music still makes your head spin, your feet move and your spirits rise ... and never more so than when performed by the remarkable Ortner-Roberts Trio."

Tom Roberts' Lecture on "The Forgotten History of Pittsburgh Jazz"

Pianist, arranger, and historian Tom Roberts rescues the forgotten history of the roaring twenties through the early years of the depression in Pittsburgh jazz. The lecture includes rare recordings and video performances as well as extremely rare reviews and advertisements from the press of the day. The lecture focuses not only on the accomplishments of such well known figures as Earl Hines, but also on the lives and recordings of others who have slipped through the cracks of time. We will see and hear their legacy remembered!

Pittsburgh Allegheny Unitarian Universalist Church: "Who are these Germans?" - A unique look at Holocaust history and how young Germans today are coping with their country’s past.

Details:

Representing very different periods in Germany’s history, two Germans offer insight into the Holocaust and how a new generation of Germans are reconciling this difficult period of history.

Tom Roberts, who is one of the leading exponents of early jazz piano in the world today, accompanies his wife Susanne on the piano.

The performance provides an eye-opening glimpse into the Holocaust, and tackles the idea of what it means to be German in the 21st century.

A discussion/question and answer period will follow the talk.

Fritz Ottenheimer, as a Jewish boy growing up in Nazi Germany, escaped Nazi persecution by immigration to the U.S. in 1939, and eventually fighting against Germany with the U.S. Army at the end of WWII. A retired engineer, Mr. Ottenheimer has documented his experiences surrounding the Holocaust and Post-War Germany in a memoir “Escape and Return”. On the back cover celebrated author Elie Wiesel states:  “… I read it immediately and was touched, deeply touched by its content as well as by its style – I hope it reaches many readers and opens their hearts to your memories.”Fritz Ottenheimer resides in Pittsburgh, PA.

The Ortner-Roberts Duo at Shadyside Acadamy

The Ortner-Roberts Duo presents “Hot World Chamber Music“, a musical assembly program that is as entertaining as it is unique. Students will experience incredible music from across the world and across time as if they have entered a musical time machine. The virtuosic duo combines Swing, Classical, Klezmer, Calypso, Gypsy, and the sounds of many other cultures into a spicy musical gumbo.

Intensity, virtuosity and an instinctive sense of style characterize the artistic dialogue between the German clarinetist Susanne Ortner-Roberts and the American pianist Tom Roberts. Their freedom to play and innovate with their music lead them to create a new fusion sound between different musical styles from all over the world.

Wheeling "Who are these Germans?" - A unique look at Holocaust history and how young Germans today are coping with their country's past

Details:

Representing very different periods in Germany’s history, two Germans offer insight into the Holocaust and how a new generation of Germans are reconciling this difficult period of history.

For their 2010 Midnight Radio season finale, Bricolage recreates the Mercury Theater's classic end-of-the-world radio play - with a Pittsburgh spin. War of the Worlds was written by H. G. Wells and adapted for radio by Howard W. Koch. It was broadcast on October 30, 1938 on CBS Radio, creating widespread panic among listeners, many of whom actually believed the US was under attack by martian invaders. In signature Midnight Radio style, Bricolage performs the story live, complete with vintage sound effects, musical guests, commercial spoofs and more.

Discover how a spirited sense of play can lead to totally new musical sounds with the Ortner/Roberts Duo! Enjoy a unique musical performance that fuses harlem stride piano with traditional klezmer – then join the action as you experiment with rhythm and improvisation in a group workshop with the musicians!

Intensity, virtuosity and an instinctive sense of style characterize the artistic dialogue between the German clarinetist Susanne Ortner-Roberts and the American pianist Tom Roberts. Their freedom to play and innovate with their music lead them to create a new fusion sound between the lively, traditional instrumental music of the Eastern European Jews and the acrobatic Harlem Stride Piano of the Early Jazz Era. The Ortner/ Roberts Duo has performed throughout the Eastern United States as well as Germany.
